I am at about one month on the #348 nitrile quad ring and it appears to be holding well in spite of 102 degrees here in South Carolina. I saw my first leak at about 3 years and just cleaned the initial O-ring and went about 2 more years. I am not saying that it will never leak again but if I can get 3 plus years then I am happy. The leaks start slowly and are easy to fix and I get to clean out the tank and put in new ATF. I did not want to use Permatex or RTV for that reason.
I would be interested in nmjack's experience with the over sized ring as I consider that my next option if the leak comes back.
Any other experience would be appreciated.
Well here we are with another summer behind us and my pump is leaking again. I had put in a #347 BUNA-N 70 Durometer X-Ring (Quad) ID 4.225" X .210" CS. It is not as bad a leak as I had earlier but it does leak when the temperature gets hot. I have not taken it apart yet, looking for a new approach. I had two of the quad rings made as well as two "O" rings; ID 4.225" with a .218" CS. I'm not sure the additional .008" CS is enough to make any difference but may try it anyway. It's just a pain to take it all apart and I've never had any sludge in the tank to worry about so that does not give me any other reason to pull it all apart. I'll post if I find out anything more.
We had an unusually hot summer in western South Carolina with temps at about 106 degrees or so for a few days. I did get a drip or two but now that temps have cooled the quad ring appears to be holding again. I did not lose enough fluid to require topping off. I do like the idea of putting a hose clamp around the area of the resevoir where the plactic and o-ring contact. That sounds better than the Permatex or RTV solution.
This is clearly a design problem that Lippert should own up to and become part of the solution (other than being willing to sell you a new correctly designed pump). How hard could an engineering solution and retro fit kit be?
