LED Backlighting of Glass Tile

I have seen several RVs with back lit glass tile in the stair wells and behind the kitchen counter. I would think the grout and mastic would block the light from above or below. The tile looked as if it was evenly lit. How is this done?

Thanx

  • I wonder if they were those new plastic "smart tiles" I saw at home depot. They have a very shiny finish. They could have some version that is made for lighting.

The tile could be "edge-lit", which means an LED (or other light source) is placed on the tile edge and the lighting would look even when looking from the front.

This is how we lit some aircraft instrument panels evenly when I worked for a defense contractor.

That was my thought also but the grout and mastic would have to be clear. The tile would also have to be removed from the backer.

  • I believe there is a "clear" mastic made to be used with glass tile.
