Legality Of Side Marker Turn Signal Lamps?

Quicksilver has two on each side. Amber front, red rear. They play possum until the turn signal switch is activated then blink on their own circuit (flasher). The amber is atop the front wheel well, the rear is atop the leading duals wheel well. I need to renew the 10-year RV permit down the line and might as well shop in Texas or Arizona. I can't find a darn thing online about this. The bus registration expired eight years ago, and I do not want to get stopped and checked. The vehicle will have lots of liability insurance so the license thing is simple avoidance of feeding the coffers of people who make 10-times the money I do.
  • Sec. 547.3215 USE OF FEDERAL STANDARD

...at the time the vehicle or motor vehicle was manufactured.
  • Thanks! I probably will end up in Texas. The last time there with the bus in 1989 the Starr County deputy Sheriff pulled me over and insisted in looking inside. he was latino but he said he was looking for "illegals". That state is in a different reality.
  • For that year, I would say that is legal. You do not have to upgrade to current standards.
  • Originally built had absolutely zero. Remember, this is a 1978 Crown bus. I cannot find regulations for either Texas or Arizona online. The front amber is around six and a half feet aft of the front bumper. The rear is about ten feet ahead of the rear bumper. Single filament 1156 bulbs.

Five and five. Amber markers in the front, red in the rear. Both are visible from the side. I retained the original tail and amber with an arrow turn signal lamps.
  • Very cool Jim!

Mex - You probably have 2 choices:
    1. As originally built
    2. Current regulations
  • Mex, You can replace them with the original turn signals! :B

  • The mid-ship markers should be on with tail lights, They can flash for turns as well.
Mexicowanderer: What kind of rig do you have?
  • As long as they are amber at the front and down the sides with a red one near the rear you SHOULD be fine as long as the all are in working order. But then some over eager revenue officer may think otherwise. I used to work for a company that used three down the side on a 53' trailer. Some of the major bus companies are using four down each side and they would fall under the Federal (DOT) regulations.

Of course you could have a railroad crossing arm drop down along with all the flashing lights and some dimwit will still pass when you are midway it the turn.
