Listen carefully to your propane regulator

This morning I opened the valve on one of my propane tanks, getting ready for a trip. None of the appliances was on. I live on a busy street, but fortunately there was a break in the traffic -- during a quiet interval, I heard a very faint hiss. That should not happen if the appliances are not running.

The noise was so faint that I could not locate it. There was no smell of gas -- the breeze blew it away, I guess. I mixed up some soapy water and brushed it on all the fittings. Sure enough, there was a very slow leak in the top of the regulator valve assembly -- the bubbles grew very slowly, but it was clear that there was a problem.

So off to Camping World for a new regulator and two new pigtails. (My old pigtails would not fit in the new regulator -- the old ones were 3/8 and the new regulator needed 1/4 fittings.)

Bottom line --even if you don't smell gas, spend a moment just listening to the regulator.

  • I would pay double for a regulator with a bombproof (so to speak) diaphragm. Maybe some sort of advanced silicone? We caught this leak before anything happened -- next time, I might not be so lucky.
  • This is very common. There is a rubber diaphragm in the regulator and over time as it flexes it will develop a pinhole leak which will continue to grow until you notice it or your appliances quit working.
  • We noticed the occasional smell of propane at the front of our trailer one day. Traced it to a small 1/16" diameter (weep?) hole in the small regulator on our secondary propane tank. It's hard to believe they can't design a regulator that won't leak propane like that when the diaphragm fails. On a trailer with enclosed propane tanks it wouldn't take long for propane to collect to deadly levels even with a small leak like that.
  • I've had 2 regulator diaphragms fail in the last few years. One was similar to yours where I heard a slight hissing sound and occasionally got a whiff of propane. The other was more scary when the built in regulator in a Buddy Heater started leaking propane out the weep hole catching the heater on fire and melting the plastic case.
  • Leak test propane system is an annual service I do. Vibrations will loosen and break stuff
