LP gas solenoid

I have a question for any of you who are familiar with LP or combo gas detectors such as the Safe-T-Alert Model 70-742-R, which has a solenoid connected directly to the propane tank that turns off the propane when the alarm goes off. I just looked at the solenoid, and gently touched the top with my finger. It is blazing hot, hot enough to burn if I touched it longer than an instant. Is this normal? The coach is currently plugged in, my multi-stage converter is putting out a nominal 13.6 volts, nothing is turned on (refrigerator, water heater, heater all off), but propane valve is open and LP detector indicator is green. Again, is this normal, or an indication that something may be wrong with the solenoid?
  • Maybe put the question to the manufacturer. Sure seems too warm to me. We have zone valves in out hot water heating system that are actually just a thermostatically controlled solenoid. These solenoids are warm but one would not get a burn if one touched one for an extended period of time. The heat your describe would be a potential fire hazard I would suggest.

  • I just talked to Customer Service at MTI, and they told me it is normal for them to get that hot. Just seems strange, especially since there is no warning label about the danger of touching them.
  • yes it is normal for them to be hot, but I would replace the solenoid if it is THAT hot.Doug
