LP TANK DATE STAMP ?

A few years ago I had some Canadian friends that just took some metal stamps and re-stamped their own tanks to a more current date...Nothing I would do, but just sayin

is that is the regular gas grill size type just take to a tank exchange places and pick one with a newer date. easy enough way to exchange the old for new.

I was getting a 20# filled and the guy said that he would fill it this time but not again.
Getting home I looked at it and it looked like a food grill had spilled grease on the top edge. I figured that I would sand the rust off and paint it.
When I sanded it I found that it was badly pitted.
I guess that the guy knew what he was what he was doing, thanks.

Requalification

(USA) NFPA deginitions

ASME Container (or Tank). A container constructed in
accordance with the ASME Code.

Container. Any vessel, including cylinders, tanks, portable
tanks, and cargo tanks, used for the transporting or storing of
LP-Gases.

Cylinder. A container constructed in accordance with U.S.
Department of Transportation specifications (Title 49, Code of
Federal Regulations).


2-2 Containers.

2-2.1.3* Containers shall be designed, fabricated, tested, and
marked (or stamped) in accordance with the regulations of
the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the ASME
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, "Rules for the Construction of
Unfired Pressure Vessels," Section VIII, or the API-ASME Code
for Unfired Pressure Vessels for Petroleum Liquids and Gases, whichever
is applicable at the date of manufacture. (See Appendixes C
and D.)

2-2.1.5 Cylinders subject to the jurisdiction of DOT regulations
shall be filled, continued in service, and transported in
accordance with those regulations.

Cylinders that are built to DOT standards may be filled for 12
years from the date of manufacturer and then be subject to
requalification. NFPA 58 5.2.2

Requalification Method
Visual (per NFPA 5.2.3) 5 years
Modified Hydrostatic Test 7 years
Water-jacket Hydrostatic Test 12 years

In all the years I've had a thing that holds propane (so I don't get into tank vs cylinder debate)> I have never been denied getting it (them ) refilled. Maybe I have been lucky and no one cares. Or because the tanks always look new they assume they are and don't look too hard.

Tanks do not have re-certification requirements. ASME/NFPA jurisdiction. Tanks can be any size.....11 gallons to 5000 gallons.
Motorhomes have TANKS (permanently mounted)

Cylinders (if portable regardless of size) do have re-certification requirement and are under DOT jurisdiction. TTs, TCs, FWs, have portable cylinders.

Pots are 20, 30, 40 lb.
Cylinders are 100 lbs.
Tanks are 250 and 500 gallons and are "set" by the LPG distributor.

Cylinders or tanks is kind of like the magazine or clip debate. We all knew what he meant.

Our newest tanks are stamped by manufacture to re-cert in 10 years.

Maybe cheaper metal used on newer ones?

The two that came with my 05 TH are just 10 years need to get them re-cert when I use the last of the gas in them.

You don't have a tank, you have a cylinder. Tanks are fixed in place on a RV, like on a motorhome.

Cylinder inspection intervals are determined by the US DOT. The re-inspection interval depends on the method of inspection.
