A few minor players may have been skeptical they were not on the level of Einstein, Fermi, and Oppenheimer. The same bunch of naysayers were trying to convince the white house there was a great chance atmospheric nitrogen would enter into the chain reaction.
In case you didn't get it, "they" refers to the amorphous bunch that seem to think because it hasn't been done, it can't be done. Luckily there are the Wright brothers, Carl Benz, James Watt, Nikolai Tesla, and many others who worked on in the face of stolid resistance to new ideas.
Heck, I even heard Copernicus drew some fire about the solar system configuration at one time.

was kind of part of the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was initiated in 1941, the chain reaction in Chicago happened in 1942. Potato, potahto.
