The flat earth society? The graphite pile they built in Chicago proofed the concept years before the Manhattan project was created. A few minor players may have been skeptical they were not on the level of Einstein, Fermi, and Oppenheimer. The same bunch of naysayers were trying to convince the white house there was a great chance atmospheric nitrogen would enter into the chain reaction.
Heck, I even heard Copernicus drew some fire about the solar system configuration at one time.
And that graphite pile they built in Chicago was kind of part of the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was initiated in 1941, the chain reaction in Chicago happened in 1942. Potato, potahto.
