If wiring is properly sized for 12v, I don't really think there's a whole lot of efficiency to be gained going 24v. It may be that a 24v inverter is more efficient.. I really don't know. Or that PV arrays have less line-loss at higher voltages, again, don't know. Some of my 12v solar connections would get hot, but perhaps they weren't sized properly.
I simply wanted to do 24v, and a 100+vdc pv array, because I just don't like dealing with big wire. And it sounded like a fun experiment!
