Main breaker will not reset

Accidentally blew the main breaker a few minutes ago at Ft. Pickens. Outside breaker did not trip, but the main breaker in the camper did. Now the main breaker will not reset. I've turned the post power off. Still will not reset.

What is the problem?

  • Same exact thing happened at the same campsite a year later. I had to push the breaker AGGRESSIVELY to the right, then reset.
  • Also check all the neutral connections. They seem to come loose more often than the "hot"wire. I remember having an issue in Vegas with my main breaker tripping. Attributed it to really hot weather and ac running hard. Then breaker did not reset after a few trips and my power cord was very hot(hard to judge in the vegas sun). Turns out the neutral connection at my park "service" was loose. After they changed out the receptacle my ac was running much better and no more trips.
  • I think the problem was the pole breaker should have gone but did not. That, in turn, overheated the main breaker, thereby causing my problem. Must be the salt air.

There are two by two types of breakers

One "Thermal" or "Magnetic" (Some are both) These get hot they won't reset. They should, however NEVER get that hot. Though if the sun is shining and the box is black.. Can happen.

The other Magnetic, also should not get hot.

The other two are GFCI/Non GFCI

A GFCI will not reset without power Nor will it remain re-set if the ground fault is still present.

However that type should NEVER be used as a "main" breaker.

Recommendation,, While not plugged in and while running entierly on battery (INVERTER if any OFF), make sure ALL SCREWS inside the breaker box are TIGHT and all breakers are well seated.
  • Glad you got it fixed. If the breaker panel is in a closet the housing may be getting extremely hot. Open a door if needed to get some air across it.
  • I got it fixed. Either I forgot to move all the way to the right the first five times, or it cooled down. Thanks!

Pickens without AC in late June is not tolerable.
  • If it won't reset when shore power is off then I suspect you have bad breaker.
  • Not unheard of for breakers to fail. Possible to get a new one at a local store?
  • Did you move the breaker all the way to the off position and then back on again?
