I did a four panel install in series/parallel it works extremely well, giving me low light charging both early and late in the day. Of course, it does require a more expensive MPPT controller. At the time I was purchasing panels were $5.50 per watt so MPPT truly made sense. Now, however, with panels as low as 0.62 per watt, pwm rules the roost for best bang for the buck.
However, if you do wish to extract every possible watt, there is still a place for MPPT.
