Mascerator Pump

Just one question; why not use the sealand mascerator pump? It can run dry without harm? Seems like that is a good solution for RV's...
  • Might be the fact that it isn't a 'macerator' pump (grinds up waste with an impeller) and is a 'bellows' pump (only handle solids up to 1/2" diameter) discharging thru a 1 1/2" line.
  • My Flo-Jet has a rubber impeller behind the grind. It will literally grind it to a very fine slurry and pump it away.
  • I also have a flo jet and it works as advertised, pumps uphill, etc. The only thing I wonder about is, does it properly drain the black water tank? When you use your big hose at a dump station, you get that sucking action to drain almost everything out of the tank. When the flo jet is used, you pull the handle, the waste drains down to the flo jet and then the pump is turned on and it does its thing then. There is no sucking action that I have ever seen. By the way mine uses a 3/4 inch hose.
  • I believe the type Macerator this thread is about is for dumping at HOME, not at a real RV dump station.
The PROBLEM that I have is simple, IF you have a Factory installed macerator (they usually have quick connects to bypass the macerator system), WHY,WHY,WHY would you want to grind up your sewage to go into a standard RV dump connection??????? Now, if you are on a Septic type system or your own , then I can see the point. If you want to pump into your Home regular sewage system at the cleanout area, I can see why. If you want to pump into the portable dump containers, I can see why. The macerator must have a large enough inlet to get the Black tank debris to easily enter to be ground up. I fix macerators all the time because they have something lodged (hairpins/cuetips and such) lodged in the intake impellor. I would only use them if nothing else is available and would never have them hard plumbed where you cannot easily bypass them. Doug

They do suck. Some have a extra bypass hose system on the Macerator to help keep from stopping up from the suck/vacuum that can happen. But you are correct, you do NOT get that fast rush flow that helps wash out the tank when using the 3 inch gravity feed. Doug

Looks OK to me, if this is the pump you're talking about Sealand Waste Discharge Pump

I also have a regular 3" dump hose setup as well so I can use either.

I used a Shurflo macerator pump on my project with a 1 inch discharge hose that has a threaded garden hose adapter on the end if you need to add more hose.

I think my 50 feet will do the job though.....

Yes...the macerator is slower than the 3" sewer hose.
That is why it's important to use a tank rinser with a macerator so that you can help flush contents.
Takes more time and more water to get a good flush.

BUT nothing beats a macerator for pumping uphill and distance when needed.
That's why I have a portable one...use it only when needed.

The rest of the time it's........whooosh! down thru the 3" with a full tank
