MaxxFan

Evening all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to reverse the direction of the airflow on a Maxxfan? I would like to have one of the fans pulling air in instead of sucking it out. Or would I have to upgrade to one of the fans that is made for that?

Thanks.
  • I would "guess" that if you just install a DPDT switch with jumpers that it would reverse?

    Bumpy,
More detail please? Not sure what the jumpers go to..

Jumpers go in a cross. Power comes in on two of the switch legs, fan is on the common legs, jumper the power to the other set of legs, but crossed.

Of course this only works for a standard DC motor. If the fan has any kind of circuits or chips this likely won't work.
  • Most of that type fans have a common DC fan Motor, which can be run in reverse by just changing the polarity. AT YOUR OWN RISK, you could try just disconnecting the wires and reversing them. If it runs backward, great! If it smokes or throws sparks, it doesn't work. One more thing to consider, some fan blades have an airfoil to improve the efficiency of the fan. It might run backwards, but may have a lesser airflow.

thanks Gordon. for a moment there I was afraid I would have to rack my brain to retrieve 20 year old data. :)

Anyone thought of flipping the fan blade. He just wanted one the suck in air.

Flipping a conventional blade type fan will make no difference....it will still move the air the same way. Think of it like the threads on a bolt, flipping the bolt end for end will not make RH threads into LH threads.
  • Angrybert, I have the basic one, two wires in and it only exhausts. Does nothing else.

John, that was my first thought and probably what I will try first. Think its just a basic motor but it does have three speeds, but I think that has more to do with the switch than the motor.

Gordon, Bumpy, thanks for that info. Will try that if John's method doesn't work, if I still have a working fan...

    Thanks all.
