MC4 cable securement

Just looking at options.

My original plan was to rub the cables through the roof inside to my bedroom closet or cabinet over the bed, where I would have mounted the charge controller.

But since I've built (modified) a locking battery box, I want to put the charge controller in there.

So my question is this. Has anyone run mc4 cables down the front of your trailer into a battery box, and how did you secure them?

I was thinking I'd pull back the black molding and use Pico clamps to hold the cable, screwing into whatever is behind the black molding.

If that is how you went about it, what did you use to seal the screws?

How is the adhesion, highway speeds and will it rip roof material when/if removed?

If it will, you'll phone the Cordmate and they will forward you a new part for free, with apologies :)... Or what do you think? Cordmate is an interior part. Yes, adhesive can rip wallpaper off when new, and can fall off when aged. I used it inside, no plans to remove, and added a few #6 screws to make sure it won't fall off.

MC4 cables are UV-resistant. A blob of Dicor every few ft will hold it to the roof rubber. On the exterior front sloped wall - don't know, nobody normally does this since controllers are usually inside (or in front storage).

  • That cord mate ii looks interesting. How flexible is it? Do you think it will bend enough to follow the outside contour on the front of my trailer?

Just to clarify, I'm not going to run the cable inside. It's going on the outside, down and around the front of the trailer.

Not sure about "black molding". In my trailer it is "shiny" diamond aluminum plate on the front wall. If I were to pull cables through this diamond plate, I would use strain relief connectors.

Having said this - you don't have to pull cables through the front trailer wall. Just follow red battery cable to the inside, you will find a J-box and bunch of wires going up through the black coroplast and into the floor particle board. Drill another hole through the floor of the front storage. It's just a 3/8" particle board. Make sure you don't hit the floor joist. If your trailer is anything like mine, the front storage is adjacent to bedroom cabinet or a night table next to the cabinet.

I didn't route solar cables to controller outside, but instead mounted controller on the wall under the cabinet, and routed the battery cable outside.
