Caterpillar and Terex both have a long laundry list of reasons why they put factory battery disconnect switches on the negative side of the battery.
I use a pair of 100 watt 12-volt incandescent lamps and a good DMM to verify an amperge monitor is not telling fibs. Most larger amperage shunts are 50mv.
