A lot of trouble for what I would seem to see as a non-problem. The water pump should have a pressure switch that shuts it off when there is no demand for water. If it doesn't there is likely something wrong with the pump. We have a ice maker in out refer and that requires that the pump is always on when not hooked up to shore water or it screws up the ice maker.
