Ok, I will use a bigger cord.
I cannot find size on any of my cords -- they are old, have paint on them, etc. I was thinking that the standard construction/outdoor ones were 16, but is that right? I have a lot of those and one long one of the next size up.
I sent PD an email and asked them the gauge of the supplied power cord, too.

shorter means LESS resistance , which means a higher amp draw at any voltage
Great! So, for testing the charger, do I just hook up the coil and the charger to the (same) battery terminals? Somehow that doesn't seem right...
