Why not just store all your e-books on several Iomega Jaz or Zip drives? Then you can call them up on your Compaq Presario and view them at will without messing with those pesky lithium batteries.
Last time I looked there are tons of Kindles for sale and a boatload of books that available for the Kindle, and even more from the library for Kindle. Hardly seems like a "blast from the past". You may need to update your oldies list.
