2 banks of 4 batteries can use 150 amperes of charge rate at 29.00 volts to minimize generator run time. Use this as a reference when selecting a charger or troubleshooting. Offset the cost of the chargers by fuel and wear and tear saved on the generator.
I'll bet what you have falls far short of this. A pair of highest power SEARS 12 volt chargers would be better than nothing. One for each 12 volt bank.
