For any AC I'd go 6 batteries. But, don't expect to run it all day on just batteries. Good chargers aren't cheap when you get up in the amps department. My old Prosine 2.0 IC would charge at over 100 amps. I don't think you can do much more than that.
A good pure sine IC (inverter charger) might be a good investment. Also, a lot of solar (800 watts or more) might be worth it if you use this system a lot.
