Need new converter: 14.4v or 14.8v?

I need to replace my Iota converter and have been considering the Progressive Dynamics 9245 converter. I have noted there are 2 models: one that goes to 14.4 v in boost and another that goes to 14.8v "for Trojan batteries and others". I'm not sure which would be a better choice. I have 2 Costco GC2 batteries and 190w of solar. Do you think the 14.8 model would provide a better/quicker charge or should I stick to the 14.4?

  • The fast way to recharge a flooded battery is using 14.8 volts UNTIL the cells start bubbling lightly. Most Smart Chargers can't count past ten without unzipping their pants. Simply throwing 14.8 volts for a few minutes is a sales gimmick and utterly useless. Find out how long the charger stays at 14.8 It should be time adjustable to be intelligent. Fat chance.
  • Seems strange that an IOTA would fail. First time I've read about it here, but I've only been here 4 or 5 years.
  • 14.8 will be faster. Is there a link with more information on that model?
    Any reason to avoid IOTA?
  • My old converter doesn't push that kind of voltage (14 V +)but the solar is programmable up to 15V. If I want to do an equalization, I use my shop charger.
In storage, I have both banks, 3 x AGM and 2 X FLA connected in parallel. I could run a shore cord to the trailer and float the batteries on the converter but the solar does a better job than anything I can do.

What is the issue with the Iota? Sometimes, a converter repair is simple.
  • I would use the 14.8 model for flooded batteries, but not for vrla.
