need some electrical help...

So Im just getting ready to do the last fishing weekend of the year, and I unplug the trailer (Jayflight) from the house and suddenly theres this high pitched squeal inside and no lights working (but when you switch on the light switch the squeal stops). I assume this is some kind of short and have less than 48 hours to get is sorted out.

Any thoughts on what I should do here (I am not terribly electrically inclined!)

Thanks

Mike

ok so what do i do to check/fix that?

If you have an inverter, turn it off and unplug anything that is plugged into it. Then try unhooking from shore power again and see if it still makes the squealing sound.
  • I would second the suspicions on the battery. Do you have an inverter ( not converter) ?

Can you be a little more specific where the noise is coming from? Is it by your circuit breaker panel? By the way, a "short" rarely happens, and if not protected by a circuit breaker or fuse, could result in a fire. I doubt it's a short circuit. More likely, you have a very low battery and one of your alarms is making noise. That would also explain why your lights aren't working.

that is odd because i have a solar panel which should be keeping the battery topped up and its also plugged into power which should charge the batteries. sorry i cant check where the noise is coming from right now, but it does sound like an alarm. ideas as to why the batteries wouldnt be charging? hope i havent killed them!

Maybe, the battery has a dry cell/s. This can cause internal short in the battery, and, it won't hold a charge, if shorted. Have battery tested.

Check electrolyte level (might be too late) in battery cells. If they are low, add distilled water and try charging with a battery charger.

Your converter and solar panel won't give it the proper charge, especially in the limited time you have.
