New brakes, need help

I installed new brakes on my Aliner. It came without brakes. Installed backing plates, drums, breakaway, etc. Installed controller on 2009 Jeep Wrangler. Brakes do work but ----- with the controller cranked up all the way I can barely feel the brakes grabbing, seems I should be able to slide the tires. Got any ideas? Is it possible the shoes just need to seat into the drums?

  • Thanks guys. First I put on ten inch brakes and have adjusted them two times now and yes they are in the correct position. Any other ideas??
  • Assuming your Aliner uses 7" brakes they are not very strong.

Since you installed them yourself, did you put them on the correct sides? There is a right assembly and a left assembly.
  • If you did not get self adjusting brakes then you need to adjust them up like donn0128 says. New brakes should not need to set to the drums.
  • Adjust the brakes. It is very rare to have self adjusting brakes on a trailer. And even then they need to be manually adjusted the first time. Jack up the wheel and while spinning the tire tighten the brakes using the proper tool until you can no longer spin the tire. Back off about six clicks or until you can just spin the tire. Repeat the other side and go for a tow.
