New Member-generator repair question

Hi,
New member here. I've got a 1988 Winnebago with a 4K emerald onan generator. It's been having problems since I got the unit and so, when it finally quit, I took it to a local shop that has an excellent local reputation. They called and told me that the generator will need a new fuel pump and that Cummins will charge $319.00 for the part alone. That seems high so I wanted to ask the group if anyone knows something more about this system. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

It often happens that OEM parts are overpriced, and even more so if you go through a mechanic who 2.5's things.

OF course there is nearly always an alternative path to possession that is generally far, far, less expensive as the O/P it appears found out.

Find an Onan/Cummins dealer and ask them.

And if you have any sense at all that they might be guessing, tell them that you won't pay for parts that do not fix the problem.

P.S. What did THEY intend to charge you for a pump ??
  • The fuel pump on our previous Onan Marquis 7000 genny is made by Carter. The only differences between the $300 Onan labeled pump and the identical $76 Carter pump sold on Amazon was the extra installation parts that came with the Carter, and the $224 paint job on the Onan version. If you can read the manufacturer's info on the OEM pump, you may find you can do much better than buying it with an Onan label on the box.
  • I just ordered one of EBay for $82 delivered, Onan factory part.

  • You can get an aftermarket pump. BUT, realize that almost ALL those pumps look the same. You need to make sure you get a pump with the same fuel pressure rating. Doug

CUmins is mighty proud of their parts

another way of saying over priced

tell the shop you would like them to use a substitute pump of the same pressure
    rating, i think around 2 - 4 pounds pressure
good thing it's not an injector pump eh?

  • The fuel pump on that Emerald should be a standard round or cube low-pressure pump that sells for around $50. Usually they are easy to find at an auto store or on the net. That price does not sound right to me.
