Newbie needs advice

Help. I just bought a used motor home last week from a private individual. Where should I look to find answers to questions I do not find answered in the owner’s manual? Example: The engine starts fine but I can’t get the generator to start. Low on LP and one coach battery showing red one showing fully charged. The generator doesn’t even click like it’s trying to start. Is that because of low LP?

Ok, first, Where can you go for answers..

Here, or other RV forums is a good start

There are a couple of "Generic" owner's manuals

    The RV Book
    The RV Owner's handbook

As I recall are the titles, Most RV dealers will have one or the other.

    Now your 12 volt/generator issues

Is the generator a Propane or Gasoline type (or Diesel) normally on a motor home the genny runs off the main vehicle fuel tank but the pick up is at around the quarter full point so if the tank is below a quarter, No genny.

Yu said when you press the TEST switch the panel (Which is not much good for this kind of thing) shows a RED and Green for the battery.. Are this arrainged like this

    Green
    Red

    Or like this
    Batt 1 Batt 2
    Green Red

    (Note colors may be reversed)

On my coach I get 1,2,3 or 4 as I recall lights,, But the red one ALWYS lights.

Better is to use a DIGITAL VOLT METER (Harbor freight's 10 buck one is great) to measure battery voltage AT THE BATTERY. (HF sometimes gives them away)

On the Genny.. We need to know where the 12 volts somes from and the make/model of the genny too.
  • Loveland,

You were smart enough to buy a known name, so contact Airstream and see if you can get an owner's manual.

I have never been called to work on an Airstream, but if it is all typical, this will help.

One battery is the main engine and the other is the coach or house battery. The main engine should charge both. In most coaches, the shore power charger/converter will charge the house battery, but not the main engine (chassis) battery.

The genset is not likely to be LP fueled but pulls from your main fuel tank.

    Matt
  • The battery that feeds the genset should be charged.
Do you have an auxiliary start switch on the dash? Push it and see if genset will start.
Not a good idea to rely on the little lights. Better to test battery with a meter.
  • I have a 33’ - 1997 Airstream Land Yacht (454 Chevy gas engine) Model P30 Body Type MH
It has a Onan generator with 109.3 hours
Whan I press the “Test” switch the lights show one coach battery red (low) one green (charged).
    It also shows LP Red
Do both batteries have to be charged to start the generator?
  • You probably have two separate battery banks. One for the Motorhome Engine - that must be fine since you're driving the motorhome. Second bank is for your interior lighting when not plugged into shore power. Do interior lights work when not plugged in? If not, I'd sure investigate replacing the bad battery!
  • Welcome to RV.net!
What is make and model of your new rig?
What is make and model of then genset?
Low LP would not cause it not to start or even click. That is a battery issue.
