Norcold chassis warped in storage

Single door 2 way fridge, turned off, empty, cleaned. I left the door open after cleaning for the 409 to dry out.

A few weeks have gone by and I go out to check something and noticed the door for the fridge no longer closes.

Upon closer look, the lower left of the fridge is pushed out, into the coach, about an inch. The other four corners are still flush with the cabinet. The bottom of the door now contacts the base of the fridge. The door itself appears square.

This is the fourth year I've cleaned and left the fridge dry in this manner.

Anyone else seen this? Am I looking at a residential fridge for the spring?

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow, too dark and cold right now.

My mental picture of this, is that looking at the indoor face of the fridge, it's flush along the top edge (width of the fridge) but the corresponding bottom edge is separated from the coach wall, pushed into the living area. Wedge shaped gap starting at the top of each side edge and widening going down?
Did Snow, Ice, Freezing Rain, get in behind the fridge, build up between the inside of the coach wall and the back of the fridge, expand and push it into the coach?
The ones I've seen, are screwed into the floor of their compartment with screws visible through the lower vent, then only fastened along side or top with a few more screws from the interior.
  • Took some screws out both bottom sides are equally pushed out now, which is a relief, somewhat?

The top is flush with the cabinet.

Will take a worklight and camera out tomorrow after the heat's had a chance to soak in for a while
  • Going to heat the trailer this weekend. 42F outside now, wow!

I found out why the door wasn't closing, a screw holding that corner of the fridge in had been ripped out of the cabinet and was blocking the hinge.

The hinge is undamaged and working as expected.

I may need to remove the rest of the retaining screws and see if the chassis straightens itself. Otherwise not sure what to do, if anything. The door does close but the seal isn't making good compression in a few areas do to the warpage.
  • MrWiz that's what I'm fearing. It's been in the teens last few days, haven't been motivated to get back out there.

Will hook up a fresh LP tank and get the furnace going. I don't think the little ac fan heater will make much of a dent.
  • The face of the fridge opening
The bottom corner is pushed out
Sounds like it collected some water in there that froze
I suggest tilt the camper so it can drain out
Raise the temp, put some heat in the camper
After it drains and drys use a rubber mallet to try and push it back in

l--O^0--king forward to the pictures. I think you're saying the Fridge itself is out of position, not the connection of the door TO the fridge at the hinge. That really seems odd. Have you moved the trailer with the fridge doors open? When you send the pix, please include the Norcold Model and its Age. The Norcold "N" series, usually N6xx and N8xx, have plastic hinge components that are known to break. Norcold sells a support kit, but it only works if added Before the thing breaks. After broken it's a new door or home made reinforcements (and a lot of us have done reinforcements!). Anyhow, we have an N811 and it was made in 2002. Its hingea are different from the ones that benefit from Norcold's kit, so we need to make sure what you have before talking hinge kits. If it DOES use that fragile hinge, then DO GET the Kit. One of our OP's got two kits and did both hinges of both Fridge and Freezer. The kit is two brackets but only one fits a lower hinge. The other is for either the upper hinge, or the lower hinge if the door is hung from the other side of the frame. Means you can't buy one kit and reinforce both lower hinges.

Buy the kit, make a copy of the instructions, and go to the hardware store and find a washer exactly like the one in the kit. Use the stuff for your hinge, and sell the remainder of the kit to someone needing to do theirs, that is hinged opposite yours.

That is what I did, I asked on the discussion forum for my MH and someone had just bought the kit and due to different year/floorplan, had a fridge hinged opposite to mine, so they sold me the remainder of the kit for half price and postage, Win-win for both of us.

Freezer door is not heavy and doesn't get loaded as heavy as the fridge, so probably doesn't need the reinforcement.

  • I found a problem with my lower hinge once and it was the screw that sets the height adjustment. It was turning a bit every time the door was used until the bottom would not close easily. There was a shim missing that should move and not the screw, and after replacing it, all is well. Probably not the same fridge but might be a similar issue.
  • Are you sure it's not a hinge that is almost broken. There have been several reports of the plastic hinges breaking and the door dropping down suddenly when opened. Maybe you have one one it's way to breaking so it doesn't line up anymore.
