Thermistor calls for more cooling the warmer it gets, increasing its ohms resistance. If it fails "open" or is unplugged, the logic board tells the cooling unit to run. If it fails "shorted" or the wires are pinched into a short, then the board tells cooling unit NOT to run.
At least that's what I learned about Dometic, and I believe Norcold uses the same concept.
