I've never worked on an RV Refrig before, but from what I understand, the labor involved and the components are almost as expensive as a new refrigerator.
Probably true, if you hire somebody to replace the cooling unit. As a DIY job, there's a savings potential. That's of course:
1. You KNOW it's the cooling unit (and cooling unit only!) that's bad
2. You're able to do the DIY work
You'll get a flood of suggestions to use a residential fridge as a replacement for RV, and many have done that. In AK, so few camping areas have power hookups, you'd probably need to install solar to keep a residential fridge running. Solar, more batteries, eats into the savings...
I went to Mobile Trailer Supply in ANC with problems a couple times. Liza was very helpful and at least on one occasion sent a mechanic out to check an an appliance (water heater) for me. I just looked them up, and the website appears active, but gOOgle calls it "permanently closed." There was apparently a dump station, and that directory shows it closed, and the business purchased by Six Robblees. So, Long Story Short, I don't know if they're still there...
