Norcold Refer problems

I keep reading on here about the fire problems, recalls and failed cooling units with the Norcold 1200 refers. Is this the only model with with these problems? Are there other models that are better? I have a Norcold 682IM that is 18 years old and still working but they don't make this model anymore.

  • Norcold 1200's are not the only fridges that have had fire related problems. I had my 1200's cooling unit replaced with the Amish built units sold by "www.coolingunitwarehouse.com" with great success. Check out their website and don't hesitate to contact David Force he is a great help. I believe they also build units for your exiting fridge.
    Good luck

ALL absorbsion refers have the "potential" to catch on fire if a LOT of parameters are met. The odds are extremely rare for any Refer to catch fire from a Cooling unit leak. Norcold had some reports and decided to install a HI TEMP recall kit to prevent the potential of a fire from a cooling unit leak. The problem is, when they lose their coolant the Flue/Chimney can get extremely hot (over 700 degrees) and THAT can cause a fire in the rear. IF the ammonia leaks out and the flame is on, there is the potential of the flame igniting the Ammonia. But, as I stated, ALL RV absorbsion refers can ignite the ammonia if it leaks. IT RARELY HAPPENS. The 1200 is a 4 door model. YOU have a 2 door model and they have a updated model that fits your RV. Doug
  • My 1200 worked fine for about 13 years. had the first recall done, ignored the later ones until I got tired of Norcold hounding me, the last time by phone. arranged to get the rest of the recall completed but traded it in instead.
