Norcold Refrigerator Problem (but not Freezer)

My 5-year old RV has a two-door Norcold Model N611RT. Been working great on gas or AC. All of a sudden, when set in AC mode, only the freezer will get cold...not the refrigerator. When in gas mode, it chills down fine. If I switch back to AC, the fridge warms up. The freezer definitely is warmer in AC mode than in gas mode, but at least it is cooling.

Any suggestions as the probable cause? Is this something I can easily fix myself, or am I in for a trip to the repair shop?

Thanks for any advice you can provide!
  • 0F in freezer FROZEN
    30F in freezer FROZEN

    40F in refrigerator REFRIGERATED
    70F in refrigerator Your refrigerator

It is the REFRIGERATOR is where problems first show up. not the freezer. What a difference 30 degrees makes.
  • Follow-up to my original post...the problem has continued intermittently for the past year. Then I finally realized what the problem was: Sometimes I park my RV in the driveway head-in; sometimes head-out. When it's head-in, the fridge side of the rig faces west, right into the afternoon sun. Even if the ambient temp is not high, the sun hitting directly on the fridge side of the RV all afternoon causes the fridge to take 2-3 times as long to cool down vs. when the fridge side is shaded.

Like many problems, what did not seem to make any sense at all becomes incredibly obvious once you figure it out.
  • Have a 2013 Landmark with 4 door frig. Mine also cools freezer and not frig on either gas or Ac. 2 hours from nearest dealer. would like to fix myself if possible and yes it is under warranty

Sounds like your unit cools better on gas than electric. Given enough time(16+ hours) it should equal out. Unlike a four door unit, you only have one AC heating element so they normally either work or not on AC. Hopefully time will solve your problem.
  • Thanks for the prompt and helpful replies. It's actually not been that hot in our area (Springfield, OR). The fridge and freezer were working fine 10 days ago and then this problem just cropped up on our current outing with no significant change in weather.

When we're prepping for a trip, I usually pre-cool the refer for a day before we load in the food. I turn the unit on using AC power, and then the next morning both the fridge and freezer compartments are cold. This time, the freezer compartment was cold...but not the fridge.

I will check the temps and see what's up. The very first thing I checked was the fuse and it was fine.
  • The odds are you are NOT cooling in AC mode. That means your AC 120 element is NOT operating. 2 things that will cause that.
    1. The AC element is defective
    2. The 5 amp fuse for the 120 element on the control board is blown. IF that fuse blows, then you need to replace the 120 element as it is causing the problem (fuse blowing). Doug

Let me guess, you live somewhere that it's hotter then normal. Actual temps with a thermometer will help us help you. If your unit is not getting below 15 degrees (measured on the back, bottom wall of the freezer) then the fins in the refer section will not get below 32. The fins have to get that cold for the rest of the refer to get below 40. Adding any fan you have to the outside vent will probably help the most of anything you can do. Not opening the doors any longer than necessary will help, even putting cold drinks in a cooler with ice so you do not open the door. When it's really hot out these things struggle to keep up. Oh yea, welcome to the forums and filling in your sig with what RV you have will help.
