OBD-2 Reader Not Reporting Data

One of these little joobers

This one's from Amazon, apparently there are several, based on a chip called "ELM327" and supposed to "support all OBD-2 protocols" and run under Android on a Smart Phone.
My Motorola Droid Ultra shows it's Paired in Bluetooth with "OBD2" and the recommended "Torque" OBD-2 app shows the Device. Just doesn't display the Code (probably O2 Sensor Heater) that has the Check Engine Light lit on our 1997 Ford Aerostar. It also does not display any other info like "Engine RPM" that have to be happening if the vehicle is running. Torque display is "No Data From Device."
Suggestions?
Other than "Don't miss the Amazon Return-By-Date?"
THANKS!!!
  • I had the same exact problem when I connected the ELM327 blue tooth to my 2001 Ford F150 truck. I then tried it on my 2007 Dodge Ram pickup and it worked correctly. I then tried it on a 2008 Ford Escape and it worked correctly on that vehicle. I read somewhere that reading the ODBII protocol from older Ford vehicles causes problems with the Torque application. Have you tried the device on another vehicle to make sure it is working properly?

    DD,

I think I've been trying essentially what you suggested above.

When I plug the Adapter in, a Green LED blinks then a Red LED lights and remains ON.

When I look in BT and in Torque, the indications are that the devices see each other.

Torque checks a bunch of protocols, then reports "No Data from ECU, is your Key ON?"

So I'd welcome any info you can provide.
  • Iirc, you have to have torque closed, go to your bt menu and "connect" to the device, wait for it tomdo so. Car key in run position or running.

Give it 30 secs or so, then open torque and select it from there.

I have the same one and use it with my tablet and phone. I recall having similar confusion until I realized that paired wasn't enough.

I've also had the rare occasion where I had to unpair it, turn off bt, turn off car (open car door after key was off to be sure), power it on, then start bt pairing again.

I think the ddefault pairing code is 1234

If you continue to have trouble, I can fire it up and give you exact steps
  • Make sure you have the proper communications protocol. The older vehicles have less sensors and provide less information. I would want to think it is your vehicle and not the Dongle or the Software. I use the software, and on my Libby Diesel, there are known issues with these things freezing up. It is the computer on the libby that is causing it.
