Onan 6.5 dies unless I hold choke

88 RV with Onan NHE spec D 6.5 kW genset. Starts ok and runs for a few minutes until warm, then dies. I can get it running and keep it running by holding the choke clockwise not quite all the way.
I'm not sure if this would be opened or closed but I think open as the choke lever moves counter clockwise on startup.
I had a voltage meter plugged in and had 128.8 volts steady at no load while holding the choke to the right. It was running smooth and steady.
There are two small notches in the bottom of the choke lever that line up with a mark behind it. I have to hold the choke lever so the right hand notch is about 1/8 inch to the right of the mark to keep it running. Not quite fully open?
As soon as I release the choke lever, it moves to the left and the engine dies.

Thanks in advance.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the SeaFoam. Hooked up a short fuel hose and sucked some straight through. Then ran 1/2 gallon of gas heavy mixed with SF. Looks like a carb rebuild might be next. Ugh!!
  • I know this isn't standard way of doing things, but it's an '88 and it very well could work without a lot of work or money invested.

Throw some SeaFoam into the gas, start the generator, using a zip tie(s) jury rig the choke where it runs smooth, walk away, let it run for about a half hour keeping an eye on it ever 5 minutes or so. Shut it down, cut the zip tie, restart, and see where're you at. You never know, you might just get lucky with the SeaFoam, gas movement, and heat.
