Onan 6.5 nhe gen set

Been pondering my generator, which has not exactly been working correctly. I took off the air cleaner and was able to access the cover behind it that I think is the cover to the brushes. It is kind of a ceramic looking deal with several wires and two kind of small braded wires that go down in different holes. I read that you could pull on these wires and the brushes should pull up freely? Are they loose down there? On a spring? How hard to pull? I need help!
  • Sorry, I was a bit anxious when I posted the above. I am troubleshooting my generator problem and am not doing a good job. I thought I had my generator problems over about a month ago, when I had a bad starter replaced. It ran both air conditioners and was running smooth and fine. We headed out for Colorado and about 100 miles down the line I felt the air conditioners were not running even though the generator was running smooth. I pulled over and neither air conditioner was running, there was no electricity, so I shut the generator down and went on. Arrived at destination, generator not needed, now in a few days it would be nice if it worked. Checking to see if the brushes were bound up seemed like a simple thing I might be able to check. Actually, I did work up the nerve to pull on those flimsy lookin' wires. They lifted up then snapped back. So, that is where I am at, just trying to check what I can until I get home and if needed I will take it to the cummins/onan dealership. Thanks for checkin'
  • Check both twist cap fuses on the front panel, then both of the circuit breakers ON THE GENERATOR. These are rugged units. Your genset has enough years on it to have a service done on it - remove armature, turn slip rings in a lathe, new brushes, check and clean connections, service the governor (test and lubricate)
  • Had the same problem last night with my onan - it had tripped one of the breakers, as mentioned, "on the generator itself" reset the breaker and all was good.
