I use a gram scale to measure and compare the weight of nitrile floats. If the float weight is considerably more than a new float, I will pass a flame over the float. If it ignites, extinguish and do whatever it takes to replace it. If it does not ignite, I will "bake" it at 175 degrees for a couple of hours. Care must be taken not to exceed this temperature. This will evaporate a great majority of the hydrocarbon added weight.
Don't even THINK about doing this with a brass or other hollow chamber float. The float will be rendered a weapon of mass destruction. Think hand grenade.
