Onan Micro quiet 2800 help

Have a 2011 Pleasureway Excel TS. Onan gas 2800 genset. 150 hours. I run it every month. Ran fine last month. Now will run when I hold in start switch, dies immediately when I release start Switch. Gas tank is full, oil level is perfect, van is on level ground, no animal nests in Generator. Anything else I might try before bringing to shop? Thanks.

    Check your battery voltage.

These little generators work on a voltage in / voltage out basis. If you give them 12.5 V DC in but they will give you 125 V AC output. While they can clip higher voltage they cannot boost lower voltage. To prevent damage to electronics the generator just shuts down if the voltage is too low. While 9 volts will start the engine, it won’t make safe AC voltage. As long as you are holding the start button down, as mentioned above, the generators safety switches are bypassed, once you release the start button the safety switches are part of the circuit and do their job.
  • Chuck,

Many generator have a safety by-pass in the start circuit. For splash lube aircooled units, this is usually an oil level and an over heat sensor. If you have a wiring diagram in the book or can download one, check those two out. If the oil level sensor is a float in the fill plug / level check, check that first. I have seen more than a few of those break a wire and the symptoms were exactly as you report.

  • There are two rods on top of the carb. Make sure they move freely. Also try removing the air cleaner and then starting it. Mine would start but could not carry a load, pulled the air cleaner and then it ran fine.
