PI EMS-PT50 Issue?

I have 2 EMS-PT50's. I full time and if one has to go back for warranty I put my spare in service. I will not EVER plug in without one. I have had both replaced under warranty since September 2016 due to damage, but that isn't the question right now. Both of my units are the current design with the lexan cover over the socket.

My primary unit has been in service now since March 2017. Two weeks ago I unplugged it and moved from my home base site to a state park south of Pensacola, FL. Plugged it in and no issues - all perfectly normal. Three days later I moved 330 miles to another park on my way to Ft. Wilderness. Plugged the unit in and the LED's would not light up at all. While waiting and wondering what was wrong I heard the unit "click" as it started passing power to my rig, but still no LED's. I pulled my spare unit out of storage and plugged it in and no issues. The LED's lit up as normal.

When I arrived at Ft. Wilderness I plugged the original unit in and the LED's lit up as normal as they did when I arrived at my summer host site after 8 days at the Ft. I talked with PI and they said they had no idea what the problem could have been, but I could return the unit for repaid/replacement if needed. When at the park where the problem occurred I plugged the unit in at another pedestal on another row of sites and the same thing happened.

It is obvious to me this park had a problem, but with no LED's and my PT50 seemingly working ok, other than the LED's I have no idea what their problem could have been. Any ideas guys?

  • With a delayed click longer than the normal delay that sounds like a CG problem and since it happened on multiple pedestals the problem is in the CG distribution system common to all of the pedestals.

But normal operation and no LEDs suggests the unit failed. Perhaps an intermittent problem since it was OK at another park.

Perhaps there was some noise/transients etc on the power line that the unit could not handle.

Other than checking the original park power with voltmeters and scopes I'd wait to see if it fails again.

Maybe call PI and ask about plugging the 2 units in series and see what the LED show on the unit that displays?

Boy, that's a head scratcher :h especially if Progressive hasn't got an explanation!
  • Relying on idiot lights alone is just cause to end up in a rubber room.

I am doing up a circuit to use as a plug in receptacle tester. L/N, L/EG, N/EG mini 3 digit LED meters. Will go to a friend as a surprise gift.
  • Heh heh heh. How about an LED coupled to a zener with resistor that triggers at 180 volts?

    Solid Flash?
    No stinky bueno.
  • It sounds to me like maybe the connection to the display board in the one unit is sporadically loose. I think the display on the non-remote units is basically the same as the remote display internally, just attached to the case and wired to the main control board with a short little lead rather than a four-conductor phone wire.

The delay before the "click" was normal duration. I didn't actually time it, but it seemed to be pretty close to normal.

The park voltage showed nominal 120v on both legs with my spare unit.

After 8 days in service at my host site park the unit that had the LED issue is still working normally. With this problem only being present at one park I'm leaning toward them having an issue. Why not a problem with my spare unit? Who knows?
