That's a great idea if you have no concept of honesty and don't mind spending the time to swap out the units.
Even if I ignore the integrity part. I would not want to deliberately break my surge just so I could spend the time and effort to swap it out. These are hard wired units not plug and play.
If you want to make an effort to avoid the problem. Put plugs on the existing unit so you can physically remove it when using the generator.
It will take just as much effort as swapping it out for a replacement.
