In this case Protect means "disconnect".
Protects from low voltage? Not to my comfort zone of 107 volts.
Protects from high voltage? Yes, but so does my particular autoformer.
Protects from truly serious surge. No way. Not any better than something from a dollar store, since they are both based on MOV technology.
Polarity checker works--but so does a $4.50 item from Lowes.
Open neutral protect is great for 50 amp RV's. But I'm not a 50 amp so that is the Emperors new clothes for me.
The solution I use is more expensive than the PI unit--so it is not for everyone. If I had to choose I'd pick checking the voltage power supply under load (which the PI does not) and checking polarity (which the PI does do), before plugging in the RV.
I'm currently plugged into one leg of a 50 amp circuit with no one else on the feed, and drawing 1900 watts, between the fridge and roof air conditioner. That is enough to cause the autoformer to boost the voltage from 114 up to 117. I've tested right down to 96 volts (on a weak 15 amp shore power supply) and still stay above the 107 volts that keeps me sane.
Does the PI work? Yup. Does it work as well as the advertising copy writers suggest? Nope.
You don't say what autoformer you are using but the 50 amp Hughes is in the $600.00 range. Double the price of the PI unit.
We are comparing apples and oranges and expecting them to taste the same!;)
