There's a youtube video out there of someone experimenting with a Honda 1000i or 2000i and various power sources. I think he used mains power briefly (proof of concept), but for sure he used an inverter.
As I recall, as long as the other power source was energized first, the Honda had absolutely no issues syncing up and sharing the load.
