As a designer and owner of such a critter (385 amperes at 28 volts) the idea is valid. At the expense of weight a suitable engine can operate at say 1,600 RPM under FULL LOAD 24/7 364 (one day in hours for maintenance). Try operating a Honda for a solid year and then shut it off and yank the cord. The engine will spin for a half minute cause it ain't got no compression (worn out).
Rule of life.....nothing's perfect. Almost everything has strong and weak points.
It is VITAL to control alternator voltage PRECISELY with a system like this. Within a few hundredths of a volt. Adjustable voltage to allow the inverter to see an exact predetermined voltage to achieve output voltage. Frequency will be correct but I highly suspect the internals of a MAGNUM inverter to be of slightly higher quality than the inverter of Honda generator. I use a diesel prime mover and it operates at 1,300 RPM.
