I am not sure this applies to the Op's situation, but when running some tests I did not find that the amps went up when revving the engine as opposed to idling.
I also read that if you turn on your headlights, this will fool the alternator into keeping the voltage (and so amps) up. Didn't see any of that either.
Maybe it varies by truck, or there is a lot of "old wives tales" involved- no idea, but be warned.
