Pre-99 Kwikee step question

i have a 99 jayco eagle class C and have a kwikee 40 series electric step and think that i might have broke a gear tooth and now it makes a loud clicking sound when it retracts (only when fully retracted does it make clicking sound. and the clicking lasts for a few seconds.

im going to pull it apart and see if in can figure out the problem but i have read and been told that kwikee pre-99 parts are pretty much non existant any more.

so my question/s are are there any gears available that i can repair this issue, if not is the pre-99 40 series steps the same as the post-99 steps. (basically if i bought a new gearbox/motor) would it function the same.

  • This is a very common model post 99, but before the latest Chinese motors.-
  • ya mine looks nothing like that im guessing i have a newer than 99 model then!

the only difference that i see in mine from the ones on the kwikee site is that the arm is at a 90 degree arm and the one on the kwikee site has a cresent shaped curve.
  • 1999 was the year Kwikee changed from the Delco series wound motors to the Ford permanent magnet motors, not the recent changes to the door switch. The Delco models were far different- a change akin to the recent switch to the integrated motor and gearbox (IMGL).
Here's a couple of pics of the old setup-

There are basically two functions that changed on the new control box

The reed (magnetic) switch in the door flipped, So you need to replace it along with the control box

and the POWER switch is now an OVERRIDE switch, I do not think it needs to be replaced.

You may have to replace a connector or two as well.
  • I don't remember the date they changed, but the old Kwikee models used old GM series wound motors which are quite different than the new ones- they are grounded through the case, and one lead is forward, the other reverse, as opposed to reversing polarity as the do now. The old gear cases etc. are far different than the new ones.
  • You can find Ford Window Lift assemblies at any Auto Wrecker. It doesn't matter if it is Left ,Right, or Tail gate! The Motors are all the same as are the gears.
As a matter of fact these exact same units were also used by G.M.and Chrysler , back in the 70/80 ,s! the Left ones just have the same shaped housings that Kwikee used.

Kwikee modified the housings to fit their particular application by grinding down some of the mounting studs ! You are really only after the Gears inside, and/or the Motor.

The exact same Motor and gearbox was also used for various Windshield Wiper applications as well!

And Yes You can still buy them New at NAPA and other Auto Supply Stores.
  • awesome thank you im going to check to see if that little gear will work. if not ill just get the whole assembly!
  • The controller will operate the motor without any changes.
Do you have a manual for your step? It should show linkage part number.
The big difference as I remember is the shape of the linkage.
The motor assembly is out of left power windows in many Fords. I beleive the main one people use is a Taurus(?).
Not sure if this is for your model. You need to try to get model number off your step to be sure what to order.

  • ok i was looking at that earlier but noticed the disclaimer where it said normally fit. and that drew up a red flag..

now do you know if i need to replace the whole motor/gear box and controller. or will the controller function the gearbox and motor the same.. or can i just replace the gearbox and re-use the motor and controller.

sorry for what may seem like simple questions just wanting to make sure i order only what i need.
  • Most parts are still available. Problem in many is the control box. Some functions have been changed from normally open to normally closed. Or is normally closed and now normally open
