Preferred starting battery mfgr

Looks like I might need a new battery. I usually get about 7 years from them, but this one appears to be on its way out after only about 3. A local mechanic swears by Johnson Controls. He says they are superior to Exide in reliability and longer lasting. Is he right?

  • I have heard that the difference between a 3 year and 6 year warranty on a battery is 3/8" below the plates and 1/2" below the plates, so that once there is junk that falls off the plates that builds to 1/2" thick, the plates short out, and the battery life is over.

Planned to fail in a short time.

Johnson Controls makes many of the batteries today, and under many brands. Several designs, and several life spans are designed to each one.

I think that Exide and Trojan make the other batteries, with only a few made by other manufactures.

Good luck with whatever you do get.

    Fred.
  • Both manufacturers build batteries in different qualty grades for different brands. My preference is to buy from a retailer that will back up the brand being sold with warranty service. That might be your local mechanic.

Also, different warranty periods do not always mean differences in grade or quality, the higher price might just represent the added cost of a longer warranty.
