Pressure relief valve on hot water heater

My pressure relief valve is leaking at water heater at home, but has same type set up like RV. Do these valves go bad and I can just replace the valve? Water still gets hot. The water heater is old so not surprised I valve doing its thing is because tank is shot.

What do you think I should do to trouble shoot?

  • If it still leaks, check your water pressure and your pressure regulator too. Get all the air out of your hot water side too.
  • New valve installed, filled back up with water and fired it up.

(Ya, I sort of know I got ripped when I bought new valve. Hardware store is closet to me and one of those that has just about everything. Saves trips but I still pay the price. For example I had to buy a chuck of PVC. A 10 foot piece was exactly double what the big box store sells it for. But don't have to drive 16 miles round trip either)

Water heater warming up and new valve has no leaks. (Don't know if I should say; No leaks yet or no leaks period....we'll see).

Will post again when burner shuts off meaning water up to temp.
  • Yes, they do go bad, had to replace one on our TT. No more water leaking out of the valve.
  • 29 dollars ????!!!!!!
Ok, ok, we won't tell you how bad you got ripped.:)

But it really is bad !!:(
  • Thanks...New valve $29.99 at hardware store that has everything, didn't want to shop around, wanted it fixed. Draining tank right now.
  • not a hard job, make sure you turn the power or gas off ,and drain some of the water out of the tank, new valve some teflon tape and a big wrench.
