I had some trouble with the "trailer plug" pins after a while in the fuse panel down by your left foot in the 2003 Chev. Had to rig an alternate power wire to the controller as it turned out, while the other three wires were ok. You could fiddle with yours to see if that might be what is going on.
Also with nothing in the truck's 7-pin the controller should not do anything? Perhaps there is corrosion in the 7-pin that is confusing things.
