Propane steak saver adapter not legal in Canada?

Wonder if that 'gasfitter' was confused on what that adapter is and used for.

The adapter used to FILL the 1lb. bottles using a 20lb cylinder ARE illegal in Ontario
Didn't find ANY reference to your adapter......allows connecting a 1lb bottle to a BBQ grill (vs 20lb)

Adapters designed to transfer propane from a BBQ-type cylinder to a non-refillable cylinder are being offered to the public via online retailers and are further promoted on YouTube (demonstrating a very dangerous practice). Refilling single trip cylinders is prohibited by Ontario laws and this practice may result in cylinders that are overfilled and thus have a potential to cause serious fires, explosions and burn hazards to end users. In addition, the adaptors offered for sale are not approved and may cause additional hazards.
While the Technical Standards and Safety Authority seeks to stop the illegal sale of refill adapters in Ontario, the public is warned that the practice of refilling Specification 39 Cylinders (typically one-pound campstove propane bottles) is illegal and poses potential risks of fire and explosion.
Clause 6.4.2 of the CSA B149.2-05 Propane Storage and Handling Code, adopted as part of Ontario Regulation 211/01 (Propane Storage and Handling), requires that cylinders shall be filled by weight or volume and specifies the maximum values permitted. Further, clause 6.4.5 states that a cylinder manufactured to TC Specification 39, 2P or 2Q and known as a “single trip” or “non-refillable” cylinder shall not be refilled.
Ontario Regulation 211/01 requires all things employed in the use and handling of propane to be approved (section 14 ) and prohibits persons from knowingly supplying propane to or using a thing or a container that does not comply with the code (section 16).

On edit: It appears YOURS is the one listed below. They are NOT illegal as they simply allow you to connect a 1# canister to your grill it the big one goes empty.

Baloney. Coast Distribution here in Canada sells the Marshall Excelsior #ME-481P, part #57556 on Page 387 of the 2015 Coast Canadian catalogue. Atlas Trailer distribution also sells it as the "2nd Chance Adapter", Atlas Part #0132-161. This adapter is readily available at any Canadian RV dealer as they all buy from Coast, Atlas, NTP/Keystone, and Thibert.

I have the same thing only with 3 feet of hose in it.

I am curious as to exactly why you got this message from a licensed gasfitter? was he snooping around your gas grill?

Send the gasfitter a reply. POLITELY ask him for the chapter and verse (Section and subsection) of law that applies.

I have been told by many people that _____ is Illegal or that ____ is required by law...

When I was a working stiff we had a complete set of the Michigan Compiled Acts (The law) on the shelf so I could easily verify.... or not..

I have even had police officers say "Gee. I though that was illegal" (A traffic action) when going through the book and finding a sub-section of PA 257 (Michigan's Traffic Code) which expressly PERMITTED the act the officer felt was illegal..

I've beaten a few tickets because I took the time to read the law and found I had not actually done anything wrong.

QUESTION,
Do those nonrefillable adaptors work now that the 20 lb. tanks have auto shut off when filling?
How do you get liquid LP out of a 20 pounder?

put the 1# tank in a freezer until well cold. turn the 20#r upside down. Wrap the 1# in a towel to keep it cold, screw it onto your adapter and open the valve. If you're luckey you will get in 12/13 oz of propane. I have never gotten much more in so overfilling has never been a problem. Do this outside in the middle of the driveway or something. Away from any possible source of ignition. Never had a problem and never overfilled a small tank.I think the law says something about illegal to refill and TRANSPORT.
