Hmmmm. Experiences differ. In the early seventies, when lead was phased out valve seats got eaten alive. Car manufacturers tried induction hardening valve seats which was an improvement but no solution. The only way I could get long term reliability was by having a machine shop install Stellite vale seat inserts. Then replace valve guides with (non bronze) guides. Many of today's engines have aluminum cylinder heads which guarantees they have valve seat inserts.
Yesterday's fuel ratio control was very poor, and compared to today's lube oil requirements, the lube oil qualities of the early seventies was a cruel joke.
I was on hand to witness Shell Oil Company's introduction of their "Fire & Ice" premium motor oil The "revolutionary" zinc dithiophosphate additive had a distinctive odor.
ECU controlled fuel with spray injectors changed the whole picture of hydrocarbon PPM contamination in the exhaust. Excess raw fuel destroys the lubricity of lube oil. A person could see lube oil dripping from the "Road Draft Tube".
I also remember the dire doomsday predictions when whale oil additive was eliminated from ATF compounding.
10 cent Coca Cola, 25 cent package of cigarettes, and when a candy bar package did not contain a 150% oversize stiff tray. I chose "Flying A" gasoline.
Pundits wail about the low cost of everything. But conveniently "forget" about low wages...
