PWM input voltage, Xantrex C40 test video

here is the Video link, the fluke is plugged directly into the Solar panel drop wiring before it enters the controller right above the panel input protection fuse, that i use for a disconnect
just click on the picture to watch the video on photobucket

i'll make a another video a little longer and hopefully better IF you need it BLF

18V input, 14v output

  • The Xantrex can be a solar controller, a load controller or a wind turbine charge controller
But it can only be configured to be one of there's things
Configured as a charge controller there is no connected load
There are four lugs to be used for source input and battery charge
Or battery input and load output
No auxiliary dump like some shunt controllers

I THINK this discussion is because the controller You were using is built similar to the cheap controller I just removed
Panel positive and battery positive and load positive are common
Check one with an ohm meter
So if you ground your meter to a common ground ..Panel..and load terminal will ALL read the same voltage
The controller works because the panel negative is isolated, and output negative goes to the battery
I wonder what voltages differences you would read between if you disconnect the battery from ground and read only between the pairs input pair and output pair no common ground
  • Thanks for the extra effort on that Mr Wiz. It will be a couple of days before I can watch it. I am on a restricted data plan at the moment.

I really just want an explanation why that 18-14 isn't say 14.3-14 like with other PWMs.

In the meantime, maybe somebody like Ken White or 12genusa can expand on this, which usually clears these things up, at least for me.

Also, can you clarify whether your C40 has the dump attachments, and whether the controller in controlling a PV uses that method to control voltage then too, or does it act as a switch like other PWMs with PVs? I read the manual, but maybe need to read it several times over!
