Questions: self drilling/ tapping screws for chassis work

I'm getting ready to install my underbelly cover -- there will be aluminum C channel beams (to support the foam panels and the coroplast under-skin) attached to the underside of the trailer's frame me...

Quality self tappers do not need a pilot hole but cheap ones are soft, break easily and the drill gets dull so fast it won't go through without one. They will also eventually shear the head off causing problems in the future when you least expect it.
