This photo shows the difference between self-tapping and self-drilling screws. There is no way that you will be able to drive a self tapping screw into structural steel without drilling a pilot hole first.
Boy this post is up to 5 pages, and REALLY, this is being WAY over thought!
I have done the seal the bottom of our 5er with Coroplast, used hex head self DRILLING screws, and galvanized steel building studs from HD for support.
I believe I used #10 screws, the socket I used on the driver I filed down so it was all gripping surface. All sockets have a small rounded surface to make it easier to get the head into the socket, by filing that away I didn't slip off the hex head. I also used fender washers and just snugged up to the coroplast so as not to crush it. The self drilling went into the frame rails without too much effort.
I will try to send pictures later.
I used sheet coroplast, as my shocks are mounted inboard of the frame and I needed to box around them. I ordered black at about $11 a sheet and used ten sheets to do our 32' 5er (about 23' of frame).
OP, here is your VISUAL answer! Do as mentioned here and you will have ZERO issues.
