Well, after a trip to my local auto supply store, I may go with quarter inch bolts because they are cheaper than self drilling screws!! The self drilling screws are 90 cents each for a quarter inch by 1.5 inch screw.
If I use ordinary bolts, I will not need to thread the hole -- the nut and the lockwasher will do the job.
If there is a place where I can't use bolts (because there is no access to put the nut on), I will either use my tap and die set to thread the hole, or else use a self drilling screw with a pilot hole.
With all of that drilling upside down under the trailer, It looks like the most important piece of equipment will be my Lexan face shield, which conveniently channels all of the hot sharp metal shards away from my face and eyes and into the collar of my shirt. ;)
Wow, try a real HW store. I buy the self drilling hex head by the box, probably around $0.10 each or so. Yes, they probably are more expensive than bolts, but for me the time savings and convenience is well worth the extra few penny's each.
Never have had any case where I needed to drill a pilot hole even on trailer frame rails, and I've installed them by the hundreds on various pieces of equipment.
You also don't need 1/4" I used #10 self drilling and worked great in the frame rails. Also as I stated before file the end of the socket you use flat so it contacts the total head of the hex.
I a;so bought Dewalt 90 degree tool to get in tight spaces.
